Cobras-2 match 12 of 12 – 26/4/09

Report by Ian Trott

Phoenix Flyers - 27 v Leicester Cobras-2 - 30

The Cobras-2 squad travelled the short distance to Wellingborough for their final match of the 2008/09 season.

The Cobras built a six point lead during a low scoring first half. The Flyers then managed to pull back at the Cobras during the 2nd quarter.

In the third and fourth quarters the Flyers definitely had the measure of the Cobras but it was not enough to overturn the points gap that had been built in the 1st quarter. This made for a very close finish.

The Cobras will be busy over the summer with events on, so keep an eye on the web site for updates.

Quarter Scores Flyers Cobras-2
1 2 8
2 6 8
3 9 6
4 10 8

Totals 27 30

Cobras-2 scorers were:

Moh Abdullah 14
Helen Tolley 8
George Bates 4
Andy Corney 2
Sean Bramley 2

Total 30

Cobras-2 team were:
Sean Bramley, Helen Tolley, Graham Forryan (Captain), Andy Corney, Moh Abdullah, George Bates and Ian Trott.

Return to: Match Reports 2008/09

Cobras-1 match 12 of 12 – 5/4/09

Report by Anthony Quinn

Despite some superb performances, it looks like Leicester Cobras Wheelchair Basketball club’s first and second team will both be denied promotion this year, by the narrowest of margins. The first team look like finishing joint second on points with Lothian, only to be denied a place in the play-off’s due to basket difference.

At their final home games of the season on Sunday, both teams achieved excellent victories. Student event organiser Carnage UK presented the club with a generous cheque, in between the two games, to show their support. The money will go towards purchasing a new club trailer and a sports wheelchair for a developing second team player.

Leicester Cobras-1 - 54 v Vikings-2 - 40

In second match of the day Cobras first team took on Vikings 2. Bolton links up well with O'Connor and Vikings retake the lead. On the nearside Clarke launches a great pass over a crowded key to Vaidya who scores. On the hooter O'Connor scores Vikings lead 15 to 17. Vikings’ look confident. Once they get used to Leicester’s basketball nets they could surge ahead. Cobras have lost possession at crucial times, but have worked well up front scoring some good quick baskets, they may need all their experience if they are to win this one.

Second quarter O'Connor in the key scores, Sharma scores on his second attempt. Following a foul Williams powers in his first penalty shot and is close with the second. A great pass reaches Thomas, he scores and Vikings lead by five points. Cobras are creating chances but failing to convert. Clarke awarded penalties, misses the first, possibly distracted by a cry from their youngest fan ! However he converts the second straight in to loud cheers from the many home fans. With Mistry and Taylor back on, Cobras start to put more momentum and urgency into their play. As Vikings miss chances to extend their lead further. Taylor to Davy-Cripwell, he turns and scores a superb basket. Good build up play from Cobras but Mistry hits the rim. O'Connor also hits the rim. Davy-Cripwell looks to pass, no one there, goes for the shot and brings the scores level at 22 all. Vikings panic a bit and start to rush their passing. Davy-Cripwell has the ball, Sharma is in a good position, but Davy-Cripwell waits and waits, Taylor comes into play and drops the ball neatly in over the rim as Cobras. Superb anticipation by Davy-Cripwell, which resulted in Cobras regaining the lead at last. Vikings call a time out and the Coach urges her players to wake up. Captain Horsley reponds immediately scoring with a fantastic long shot. Taylor defends well and then goes on to score, she is close with her single penalty shot. Thomas scores and it is level yet again. Vikings don’t give up, in an extremely tight game, both teams are applauded as they go off at half time 26 all.

Third quarter. Cobras lead 40 to 36.

Final quarter Vaidya tries for a 3 pointer, his next shot creeps over for two. Finally Vikings score with a great shot from Williams. Vaidya scores, but misses from the penalty spot. Horsley falls from his chair and looks in pain. Cobras Vaidya checks he is okay when he comes back on. A foul from O'Connor, but Clarke fails to convert from the penalty shot. Cobras mark Vikings players well, as they look to close down the game. Vikings loose possession and Clarke picks out Davy-Cripwell, who rolls up and scores easily. With one second left on the shot clock, Vikings get the ball stuck behind the ring. In desperation their coach asks if this counts as half a basket ! They are given possession, but to no avail. Tolley is back on and Gill scores straight down the centre as Cobras reach 50 points. Vikings have by now run out of steam, despite a fantastic effort throughout the match. Thomas gets their final basket. Cobras strength in depth and experience in dominating the final quarter, pays off again when Gill scores and Vaidya racing ahead of Horsley converts the winner 54 to 40.

Cobras first team has been very professional and impressive all season. They have dominated matches, the players have all got superb shooting abilities. Their inventive play has been fantastic to watch. Cobras nearly achieved two successive promotions, but just miss out by the narrowest of margins. With the Coaches already bringing on new players, the future looks bright, with good financial support and loud vocal support from the fans, this club really can go far.

Vikings Coach Sue Conroy said “This performance was our strongest all season. With such a small squad and players who would normally be on the bench, I am made up. The players really stepped up to the challenge. If you had said before the match we would lose by just 14 points, against a full Leicester Cobras side, I would have taken that. With no subs, it was mentally hard for the players but I am really pleased with their performance. With one game left, we can take a lot away from this game – a lot more positives than negatives. With the press on, our inexperience showed in our indecision and at times our offense was a bit static. Ben stepped up and the players worked really hard. We didn’t panic and didn’t want to give away too many turnovers. It was a game of two halves, we did fantastically well in the first half. We tired in the final quarter, but you can’t take anything away from them.”

Cobras’ Robbie Davy-Cripwell said “We played well, players on the fringes of getting in the first team were given a chance and we still won. When they led, I was not worried as we could always bring on our strongest team to bring the game back, but I did not have to play our strongest side at any point. You have to have confidence in the players around you and not show nerves, which could affect the newer players. I felt calm and confident that we would win and it paid off. They played fantastic and used what they had to great effect. We knew they would tire, we are a fast team and we knew we could bring on stronger players at the end to kill them off. It looks like we will finish third, joint second, but Lothian have got a better basket difference. If you had told me we would finish third before the start of the season, I would have bitten your hand off. It has been an excellent first season for us in this higher division. We now have the opportunity to build and get in the first division next time and be in a much stronger position to stay up there. It is great when local businesses show their support for the squad and we would like to keep them involved as the club develops and grows.”

Quarter Scores Cobras-1 Vikings-2
1 15 17
2 11 9
3 14 10
4 14 4

Totals 54 40

Cobras-1 scorers were:

Jignesh Vaidya 15
Jayant Mistry 12
Robby Davy-Cripwell 8
Sam Taylor 8
Steve Gill 6
Sean Bramley 2
Dipen Sharma 2
Bryan Clarke 1

Total 54

Cobras-1 team were:
Dipen Sharma, Bryan Clarke, Sean Bramley, Jignesh Vaidya, Helen Tolley, Steve Gill, Sam Taylor, Robby Davy-Cripwell (Coach) and Jayant Mistry (Captain).

Return to: Match Reports 2008/09

Cobras-2 match 11 of 12 – 5/4/09

Report by Anthony Quinn

Despite some superb performances, it looks like Leicester Cobras Wheelchair Basketball club’s first and second team will both be denied promotion this year, by the narrowest of margins. The money will go towards purchasing a new club trailer and a sports wheelchair for a developing second team player.

Leicester Cobras-2 - 52 v Maulers - 21

In the first match of the afternoon, Leicester Cobras second team took on Mansfield Maulers. In the first quarter Watkinson broke clear to open up the scoring for Mansfield Maulers. Cobras finally score when Abdullahi passes to Corney in a central position inside the key. After some wasted opportunities by both sides, Abdullahi weaves along the edge of the key and gives Cobras the lead. Maulers Captain Tyler’s powerful shot goes straight in to bring things level. It is end to end chances. Abdullahi misses but Corney backs him up and scores. With Mauler’s linking up and passing well, Foster holds off a player to interrupt their play as they threaten again. Cobras Tolley scores and Bramley’s shot is close. Abdullahi commits his first foul. Watkinson’s misses with his first penalty shot, but he takes his time with the second and coolly converts off the backboard. Foster links up well and Tolley scores. Abdullahi weaves into the key and a neat pass back to Tolley, she is on fire, planting in another superb shot. Maulers start to look confused in attack. Clarke commits a backing in foul. Watkinson fails to convert from the penalty spot, but Maulers Captain Tyler is quickest in, to convert from the rebound. Abdullahi continues to pick up baskets as Cobras end the quarter 16 to 7.

Second quarter Maulers Captain Tyler snatches the ball off Clarke. Bramley races clear, but fails to convert. Abdullahi is close to scoring from the penalty spot. There is good link up play between Brooks and Sheppard, Watkinson get in at the end of the court, but hits the side of the backboard. Clarke turning sideways in the key scores a superb basket. Foster retrieves a loose ball and releases it up court to Abdullahi who converts. Foster knocks the ball out of the hands of Northedge. Maulers call a time out. Both sides then struggle to get up to their opponents key and create any meaningful shooting opportunities. Foster links up well, again, and Abdullahi scores. Abdullahi misses but Clarke is there, gets the ball and scores, good support. Tolley retrieves a difficult ball off the floor and scores, to cheers from the home fans. Clarke intercepts a dangerous Maulers pass, gets the ball out of the key and Cobras are able to attack up court again. Tolley scores again, fouled by Brooks she misses with her single penalty shot. With Maulers failing to convert Cobras extend their lead 28 to 7.

Third quarter, two passes and Abdullahi waiting inside the key, scores easily. Corney commits a foul. Captain Tyler misses from the penalty spot, but later powers in a great shot. Cobras struggle to convert, until Abdullahi turns in the key and scores. Watkinson scores straight in with a spectacular shot from the edge of the key, applauded by the away bench. Abdullahi scores again. Cobras then struggle to get out of their own half. Maulers create several scoring opportunities Brooks is close to scoring. Continuing to control his team well, Mauler’s Captain finally scores with a long shot creeping over the rim. Cobras make a double substitution. Mauler’s Captain calls for his players to defend as Cobras threaten and Abdullahi scores. Watkinson races up court and scores, but Clarke immediately scores in reply. Under pressure Clarke converts again. At the end of a fast, exciting quarter Abdullahi fires in over a heavily defended key as Cobras’ push further ahead 42 to 15.

Final quarter both sides create opportunities but fail to convert early on. Watkinson, who has been a constant threat for Mauler’s up front, races up and scores. Abdullahi continues to get baskets to finish top scorer. Typical of the good spirit of his side, Mauler’s Captain Tyler amuses everyone with some humorous comments when he falls from his chair. It is then end to end baskets. Clarke, who has played impressively throughout, rolls up to the basket and scores easily. Brooks scores a well earned basket, on the nearside. Corney scores with a great shot. Watkinson scores again. After a superb performance up front Tolley give Cobras victory 52 to 21.

Maulers Captain and Coach Tyler said after the match “I’ve not seen a better performance this season and we were with only six players. It was our best first quarter this season. We were relaxed and our skills came to the fore and shone through. Unfortunately once we got a sniff of success, the occasion started to get the better of us, the players were trying too hard and taking long and over ambitious shots. We failed to play like we naturally do. We defended the key tight and broke out quickly with number 23, that was the secret to our success today.”

Cobras Andrew Corney said “It was alright today, but not at our normal tempo, we could have played better. There was good shooting from Mo and Brian and Helen played well scoring six baskets. Our passing and communication could have been better at times. We are up to third in the table and it was great to get over 50 points today.”

Having enjoyed the first match, Managing Director Paul Bahia and Area Manager Edward Hartley of Carnage UK, presented Mike Foster with a generous cheque of £1795.00 for the club. A student brand, specialising in student events in 40 cities around the UK, where a T-shirt is the ticket to selected venues and night clubs. They organise themed nights like Super Heros, Doctors and Nurses and coming up soon a Baywatch event around the UK. More importantly they have agreed to take part in the Cobras challenge in August !

Cobras Mike Foster said “The money is much needed and will be used for purchasing a new club trailer and competition wheelchair for a player in the second team. During today’s match we tried out some new drills, but they only worked once or twice, the man out of the box drill should guarantee us a basket everytime. Despite some poor passing in the first half, we tidied things up and started moving the ball around more smoothly. Mo did well and Helen played remarkably well. We expected to beat Maulers today, but their number 23 was working very well and a constant threat getting around the key and in behind us, until we clamped down on him.”

Overall Cobras second squad has done very well this season, gelling together as a new unit. Developing some excellent new players – who have made impressive debuts and look good future prospects for next season. Cobras excellent coaching and hard training has paid off impressively this season.

Quarter Scores Cobras-2 Maulers
1 16 7
2 12 0
3 14 8
4 10 6

Totals 52 21

Cobras-2 scorers were:

Moh Abdullah 24
Helen Tolley 12
Bryan Clarke 10
Andy Corney 6

Total 52

Cobras-2 team were:
Bryan Clarke, Sean Bramley, Mike Foster (Captain), Helen Tolley, Graham Forryan, Andy Corney, Moh Abdullah, George Bates and Sue Grant.

Return to: Match Reports 2008/09

Cobras-1 match 11 of 12 – 28/3/09

Report by Jayant Mistry

Manchester Mavericks - 47 v Leicester Cobras-1 - 51

Leicester Cobras-1 beat Manchester Mavericks 51 - 47 despite playing the last six minutes with only four players!

Firstly captain Jayant Mistry was fouled off midway through the 3rd quarter, and when Sam Taylor was also fouled off at the beginning of the 4th quarter, this meant that the Cobras had to battle out the remaining minutes despite a full court press put on by the Mavericks.

Cobras-1 Captain, Jayant Mistry said, “I'm really proud of the team today. To be able to hold it together, despite being down to only four players in the final few minutes, takes a lot of heart and effort. The Cobras showed that even when the chips are down, that they have a fighting team spirit that is second to none.”

This now means that the Leicester Cobras lie 2nd in the table in their first year at playing in the 2nd Division North (behind Oldham Owls); and have a chance of reaching the championship finals in Sheffield on the 16/17 May.

The real threat to Cobras-1 gaining promotion is Lothian Phoenix who have had a huge run of success (even though their scores are not showing on the current GBWBA table). They have won 8 out of their 12 matches this season and have a score difference of 1.495. So the Cobras must win their last match of the season; and win it my a massive margin in order to beat Lothian to the Championship Finals. Cobras-1 current score difference is 1.194, so it is going to be a very long shot.

The Cobras-1 play their last match of the season at home (Leicester Leys Leisure Centre) to the Vikings-2 on Sunday 5/4/09. Tip-off is at 3.15 pm.

Quarter Scores Mavericks	Cobras-1
1 11 11
2 8 9
3 11 15
4 17 16

Totals 47 51

Cobras-1 scorers were:

Angus Baird 21
Jignesh Vaidya 12
Robby Davy-Cripwell 9
Jayant Mistry 8
Sam Taylor 1

Total 51

Cobras-1 team were:
Dipen Sharma, Gus Baird, Jignesh Vaidya, Sam Taylor, Robby Davy-Cripwell (Coach) and Jayant Mistry (Captain).

Return to: Match Reports 2008/09

The last time the teams met in January, the Cobras-2 squad suffered a heavy 38 v 17 defeat and being a bit down on players we were expecting more of the same.

The match turned out to be a real nail biter! With each team scoring in turn there some very hard fought baskets, the scores climbed steadily 2 points at a time. Moh leading the attack for the Cobras, scoring baskets at a consistent pace.

With the Cobras making regular substitution with their higher point players to give as much match time to the whole team the scoring remained quite steady. The low point players, Grahame and Sean had to stay on for the whole match, as there wasn’t enough cover for them.

In the 3rd quarter the Cobras just pulled out a 2-point advantage as the battle really hotted up. Both teams were working just as hard in defence as they were in offence. It was turning into a real test of nerves.

Going into the final quarter Sean from the Cobras took a heavy sideways hit, this left him really struggling for breath. No sooner had he caught his breath and he was hit again. With just three minutes to go of the last quarter it was looking like the Cobras were going to have to finish the match with four players as there was no sub for Sean due to a lack of low point players. In true fighting spirit Sean pressed on hard to the end.

The Cobras just missed out on a couple of late chances that would have won them the match. Ironically none of the Cobras realised that there had been an error made on the score sheet in the 2nd quarter. A rare basket from Ian was not counted. This would have meant that the Cobras would have had a 4 point lead going into the last quarter. As it was the last quarter was a disaster for the Cobras with them failing to score a single point. Cobras did manage to limit the Bears score to just 4-points; but it was not enough.

Moh and Andy put in excellent scoring performances for the Cobras and Sean kept playing hard through the pain. It was a great team effort.

The next Cobras-2 match is at home to the Mansfield Maulers on Sunday 5/4/09 at Leicester Leys Leisure Centre (tip-off at 1.30 pm).

Quarter Scores Bears-3 Cobras-2
1 10 10
2 8 8*
3 6 8
4 4 0

Totals 28 26*

* A mistake in the score sheet. Cobras-2 scored 10-points in the second quarter not 8-points as recorded. The basket by Ian Trott (no. 31) was not recorded on the score sheet. This means that Cobras-2 would have drawn the match at 28 points each. The match would have then gone into over-time, which would have been very tough for Sean with his injured ribs.

Cobras-2 scorers were:

Moh Abdullahi 14
Andy Corney 6
Bryan Clarke 2
Sean Bramley 2
Ian Trott 2
Grahame Forryan 2

Total 28

Cobras-2 team were:
Bryan Clarke, Sean Bramley, Grahame Forryan (Captain), Helen Tolley, Andy Corney, Moh Abdullahi, George Bates and Ian Trott.

Return to: Match Reports 2008/09

The first two quarters were extremely close with the Cobras just edging out a two point lead by half time. Both teams were matching each other basket for basket.

In the third quarter the Cobras started to stamp their authority on the match building up a 10 point lead over the Warriors.

The Celtic Warriors put in a determined fight back in the last quarter scoring their match best of 16 points; but it was too late for them to overhaul the Cobras lead.

Top scorer for the Cobras was Jayant Mistry even though he was playing with an injury. Robby had a fantastic match scoring 12 points. Jig, Sam and Bryan also scored a good number of points in what was quite an even spread of scores amongst the first team.

This was a great team result from the Cobras-1 squad, with a big home crowd to cheer them on. Thanks to all the players (on both sides), the coaches, volunteers, table officials and referees for a great match.

The next Cobras-1 match is away to the Manchester Mavericks on Saturday 28/3/09. There is a late tip-off for this match at 7.00 pm. So it will be a late drive back from Manchester.

Quarter Scores Cobras-1 Celtic Warriors
1 11 10
2 9 8
3 16 8
4 13 16

Totals 49 42

Cobras-1 scorers were:

Jayant Mistry 16
Robby Davy-Cripwell 12
Jignesh Vaidya 11
Sam Taylor 6
Bryan Clarke 4

Total 49

Cobras-1 team were:
Dipen Sharma, Bryan Clarke, Helen Tolley, Jayant Mistry, Jignesh Vaidya, Sam Taylor and Robby Davy-Cripwell (Captain).

Celtic Warriors team were:
D.
Cobras-1 match 9 of 12 – 22/2/09

Stoke Spitfires - 38 v Leicester Cobras-1 - 36

It was a rather different looking Cobras-1 line-up that faced the Stoke Spitfires. With a lot of the regular 1st team players not available for this match four of the Cobras-2 team (Dipen, Bryan, Helen and Andy) provided cover. The match proved to be a very close encounter with the Cobras having a slender 2 point advantage at the end of the first quarter.

The Spitfires put in a consistent fight back and just beat the Cobras by 2 points. That was so close!

Top scorer was once again Jig Vaidya (third match in a row). Special mention to Dipen (8 points) and 1st debutante Bryan who scored a fantastic 6 points.

Congratulations to all the Cobras players who made the trip to Stoke. The final result was a great score considering that the team was a change from the normal 1st team line up.

Thanks you to all that went, coached, played, cheered on, packed (and unpacked) and drove (Andy). It is good for the team for the 3rd division players to get experience of 2nd division matches. It will make us a stronger team for the future.

The next Cobras-1 match is at home (Leicester Leys Leisure Centre) to the Celtic Warriors on Sunday 8/3/09. Tip-off is at 1.30 pm.

Quarter Scores Spitfires Cobras-1
1 8 10
2 10 8
3 11 10
4 9 8

Totals 38 36

Cobras-1 scorers were:

Jignesh Vaidya 14
Dipen Sharma 8
Bryan Clarke 6
Robby Davy-Cripwell 6
Sam Taylor 2

Total 36

Cobras-1 team were:
Dipen Sharma, Bryan Clarke, Helen Tolley, Andy Corney, Jignesh Vaidya, Sam Taylor and Robby Davy-Cripwell (Captain).

Stoke Spitfires team were:
S.
Cobras-1 match 7 of 12 – 1/2/09

Lothian - 61 v Leicester Cobras-1 - 30

The Cobras-1 lost by a big margin away to Lothian. It was always going to be a difficult match for the Cobras who were missing the fire power of both their top scorers, Gus and Jayant, for this away match.

The next Leicester Cobras-1 home match is a double header on Sunday 15/2/09 when Cobras-2 take on the Derby Wheelblazers (tip-off at 1.30 pm). Then Cobras-1 take on the very tough (and so far unbeaten) Oldham Owls-2 (tip-off at 3.15 pm). The venue is as usual the Cobras home of Leicester Leys Leisure Centre, Beaumont Leys, Leicester. It is free to come and watch are matches.

Quarter Scores Lothian Cobras-1
1 22 6
2 17 7
3 12 5
4 10 12

Totals 61 30

Cobras-1 scorers were:

Jignesh Vaidya 10
Dipen Sharma 8
Steve Gill 6
Robby Davy-Cripwell 4
Sam Taylor 2

Total 30

Cobras-1 team were:
Dipen Sharma, Steve Gill, Robby Davy-Cripwell (Captain), Sam Taylor and Jignesh Vaidya.

Lothian Phoenix team were:
S.
