The Club

Leicester Cobras were formed in 1992 by a group of disabled friends wishing to play wheelchair basketball. Since then the club has become a Registered Charity, grown in numbers, strength, skills and expertise, with members from age 12 upwards. Membership is open to anyone - junior (12 to under 19 years old), adult, male or female, disabled or able-bodied players.

The Cobras are the only wheelchair basketball club in Leicestershire and competes in the National League of the Great Britain Wheelchair Basketball Association (GBWBA).

How do I join in?

The Cobras are open to anyone (12 years and over) to join the club. New players are welcome to come along to a training session and try the sport out. Just get in touch first to make sure we know that you are wanting to come along and that we have room at the training session. New players can take part in four trail sessions before you must join the club to be covered by insurance. Annual membership is £40 per year if you are waged, £25 per year if you are not waged or £20 a year if you are a junior (under 19). Associate membership (for volunteers and supporters) is free. Membership runs from the 1st May to the 30 April each year. Also you must pay £10 subs per month to train, this money goes towards the cost of the venue hire and must be paid even if you don’t attend training regularly as the Cobras still have to hire the venue. The Cobras have a selection of Basketball Wheelchairs that new players can use to get use to the sport and see if they enjoy playing it. This is a great benefit for new players as the specialist wheelchairs that are used for basketball are very expensive to buy.

Junior Development Training Sessions

The Leicester Cobras has formed a partnership with Ellesmere College in Braunstone to provide Junior Development training sessions at Ellesmere College during term time. These sessions are aimed at new junior players (from 10 years old to under 19) who have a physical disability that makes it difficult to take part in running sports. These Junior Development training sessions are also supported by Leicester City Council.

If you would like more information about these Junior Development training sessions please contact Mark Botterill (Director of Specialism at Ellesmere College).

The Junior Development training is on:
Thursdays from 4.00 pm to 6.00 pm (term time only)

The sessions start again on Thursday 3 March 2011

Future Targets

To continue to development wheelchair basketball sessions to bring the sport of wheelchair basketball to as wide group of people as possible.

We are working towards the creation of both junior (12 to under 19 years old) and women’s wheelchair basketball teams to represent Leicester and Leicestershire. For the 2010/11 season the Cobras have linked in with the Vikings in the Junior League and the Midlands Allstars in the Women’s League.
